Garland Power & Light

Since 1923, the City of Garland has been providing electric service to its citizens through Garland Power & Light (GP&L), its locally owned and controlled not-for-profit municipal utility. With 68,000 customers, GP&L is the fourth largest municipal utility in Texas and the 41st largest in the nation. GP&L is recognized nationally as a Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3®) and as a Tree Line USA Utility.

The mission of Garland Power & Light is to provide high quality, safe and reliable services at competitive rates to the citizens and businesses of the City of Garland through the efforts of a professional and dedicated workforce, and to enhance the quality of life in the city by creating a utility environment that supports economic development.

GP&L continually emphasizes customer service and involvement in the industry. Both management and staff are active members of the American Public Power Association, Texas Public Power Association, Electric Reliability Council of Texas and other industry organizations.

Garland Power & Light has two gas-fired generating plants, which combined have 529 megawatts of generation capacity. In addition, Garland partners with the Texas Municipal Power Agency which operates the 470 megawatt coal-fired Gibbons Creek Power Plant. Garland's electric distribution system has 371 miles of overhead lines and 584 miles of underground lines. Its transmission system consists of 27 substations and 127 miles of transmission lines. Garland's peak load for 2012 was 495 megawatts, with annual operating revenues of $232 million dollars.
